Business: Goodman Wines / Nikkal Wines
Lives: Healesville, VIC
Tell us about your journey into winemaking?
I studied Biomedical Microbiology at university the first time around and quickly discovered white wasn’t my colour. I was not meant to be in a confined laboratory in a coat. I looked into food production and environmental microbiology and then found myself doing a vintage in McLaren Vale at Wirra Wirra. Loved it and never left the industry.
What excites you most about the wine industry right now?
The open-minded approach to wine styles and 'new varieties.' It seems anything goes. We have a really vibrant industry at the moment.
What does your knock-off drink consist of?
Cold refreshing beer, maybe a Trumer or Asahi.
What is so special about winemaking in the Yarra Valley?
This region is physically beautiful, the wine quality is excellent and it is filled with great people.
If we were to visit you in Healesville, what should we do? Where do we eat and drink?
It’s winter, so a glass of red by the fire at the Healesville Hotel. Collect supplies at Kitchen and Butcher and have a picnic in the redwood forest at Warburton. The Flying Apron in Wesburn is home to great coffee and really good sweet treats.
You were recently involved with the Flower and Garden show through your label Nikkal. Tell us about that.
It was a massive event for a tiny business. I had this great idea for a photo booth and we managed to pull it off. It was daunting playing in the corporate space. The event itself was so different to the usual wine event - broader age groups and families but it was fun and beautiful to be surrounded by talented gardeners.
What is Yarra Valley Wine Women?
